How Stripe fees are calculated

On standard pricing Stripe charges a percentage of each successful payment plus a fixed fee. There are no setup or monthly fees. For a US account:

  • Cards and wallets online: 2.9% + 30¢ per successful domestic payment.
  • Manually entered cards: +0.5%. International cards: +1.5%. Currency conversion: +1%.
  • In-person card payments with Stripe Terminal: 2.7% + 5¢, +1.5% for international cards and +10¢ per payment for Tap to Pay on a phone.
  • Klarna: 5.99% + 30¢.
  • ACH Direct Debit: 0.8% with a 5 USD cap.
  • Disputes: 15 USD for each dispute you receive, and another 15 USD if you contest it manually, refunded if you win.

Worked examples

A $100.00 card payment costs $3.20 (2.9% plus 30¢), so $96.80 reaches your balance. If the card is foreign and the payment needs converting, the fee rises to $5.70. The same $100.00 taken in person costs $2.75, and paid by ACH Direct Debit only $0.80.

To be left with exactly $100.00 from an online card payment, charge $103.30. The fee is a percentage of the full amount, so adding 2.9% on top is not quite enough.

Small payments and large invoices

The 30¢ fixed fee takes 9% of a $5.00 payment. For large business payments ACH is far cheaper: its fee stops growing at $5.00 once a payment reaches $625.00, so a $2,000.00 invoice costs $5.00 instead of $58.30 by card.

Stripe or PayPal?

For a $100.00 domestic payment Stripe charges $3.20 and PayPal Checkout $3.98. Stripe is usually cheaper for card payments on your own site; PayPal is often chosen because many buyers already have a PayPal account. The PayPal fee calculator in the same section lets you compare both.

What the calculator does not include

  • Custom or volume pricing negotiated with Stripe.
  • Fees for other Stripe products such as Billing, Invoicing, Tax or Radar for Fraud Teams.
  • Payment methods other than cards, Klarna and ACH, which have their own rates.
  • Rates for Stripe accounts outside the United States.
