  • Where a referral rate jumps at a price threshold, the calculator finds the lowest price that actually meets your goal.

Why pricing from cost plus markup misleads

Amazon’s referral fee, and any advertising and returns allowance you model, are percentages of the sale. When you raise the price, those costs rise with it. A fixed markup on cost therefore leaves less profit than it seems, and on tight-margin products can leave none. Solving for the price from the target accounts for every percentage cost at once.

Pricing near fee thresholds

Some categories change the referral rate at a price threshold and apply it to the whole price. Clothing, for example, charges 5% up to $15, 10% up to $20 and 17% above. A $20.00 item with a $5 cost, a $3.50 FBA fee and the example’s other costs nets $7.40, but at $20.01 the 17% rate applies to everything and net is $6.01. The calculator looks for the lowest price that really meets your goal, not just a formula answer, so it handles these jumps. For a $3 profit it returns $14.32.

A worked example

With the example costs from the FBA profit calculator ($8.00 product, $5.00 FBA fee, 10% advertising, 2% returns, 100 units a month), a 25% margin needs a price of $31.47, at which you net $7.87 per unit. A 35% margin needs $39.73. A flat $5.00 profit per unit needs $27.53.

Using the answer

  • Compare it with the current price range for similar listings. If the target price is far above them, work on cost or advertising before you cut margin.
  • Re-run with a realistic ACoS. A launch phase with heavy advertising needs a higher price than steady state.
  • Keep the FBA fee input current: Amazon changes fulfilment fees, and a few cents per unit add up at volume.

Frequently asked questions

How does the calculator find the price?

It searches for the lowest price at which net profit, after Amazon fees and every cost you entered, reaches your target, then rounds it up to the next cent.

What is margin in this calculator?

Margin is net profit divided by revenue (price plus any shipping charged). It is not a markup on cost.

Why do I enter the FBA fee myself?

FBA fulfilment fees depend on the product’s size and weight and on the season. They are not published as a simple table, so use the figure from Amazon’s own Revenue Calculator.

What if no price reaches my target?

When percentage costs plus the margin add up to 100% or more, no price works and the calculator says so. Lower the target or reduce advertising and returns.

Does it work for FBM?

You can use it for self-fulfilled items by setting the FBA fee to zero and adding your shipping into product cost. The FBA vs FBM calculator compares both directly.
