Square processing fees by plan

Square charges a percentage plus a fixed fee on each payment, and the rate depends on your plan. Square Free costs nothing per month; Square Plus is 49 USD and Square Premium 149 USD a month per location.

  • In person (tap, dip or swipe): 2.6% + 15¢ on Free, 2.5% + 15¢ on Plus, 2.4% + 15¢ on Premium.
  • Online store, payment links and card-paid invoices: 3.3% + 30¢ on Free and 2.9% + 30¢ on Plus and Premium.
  • Online through Square’s payments API: 2.9% + 30¢ on every plan.
  • Keyed-in cards and cards on file: 3.5% + 15¢. Afterpay: 6% + 30¢.

  • Cards issued outside the United States: +1.5%.

Worked examples

On Square Free, a $100.00 card payment in person costs $2.75 and you keep $97.25. The same $100.00 through your online store costs $3.60, keyed in by hand $3.65, and with a card issued abroad $5.10. To keep exactly $100.00 from an in-person payment, charge $102.82.

A $2,000.00 invoice paid by ACH costs $20.00 on Square Free but only $10.00 on Plus, where the fee is capped.

Which Square plan is cheaper?

Plus lowers the online rate from 3.3% + 30¢ to 2.9% + 30¢, saving $0.40 on every $100.00. That covers the 49 USD monthly fee once online card sales pass about $12,250.00 a month. For in-person sales alone the saving is 0.1 percentage point, so Plus pays for itself only above about $49,000.00 a month, and Premium over Plus above about $100,000.00. Most small sellers choose a plan for its features, not its rates.
