Whatnot commission: what it is charged on

Whatnot calculates commission on the item’s sale price only. Shipping and any sales tax the buyer pays are excluded. Whatnot points out that this is different from marketplaces that charge on the whole transaction: on a $10 item with $4.99 shipping and $0.85 tax, 8% of the item price is $0.80, while 6% of the full $15.84 would be $0.95.

A few rules matter for planning:

  • Your rate is locked for the period. Crossing a threshold mid-period lowers your rate from the next period, not immediately.

  • Every period starts from zero. Sales do not carry over between four-week windows.

  • Live sales use the show’s category, marketplace sales the product’s category.

  • Private shows and local pickup don’t count, and cancelled or refunded orders are subtracted.

  • Custom rates as low as 3% are offered to qualified high-volume sellers.

Seller Hub shows your current tier, your projected rate and the exact rate charged on each order.

The Whatnot payment processing fee

In the US, Canada and Australia, payment processing is 2.9% + $0.30 per order. Unlike the commission, it is charged on the total order value: the item, the shipping the buyer pays and the tax. That means you pay processing on shipping money that never reaches you, because the buyer’s shipping pays for the Whatnot label. On a $50 card with $5 shipping, processing is $55 × 2.9% + $0.30 = $1.90.

The reduced commission tiers do not lower the processing fee. In the UK and EU, processing is 2.42% + £/€0.25 plus VAT.

0% commission on high-value orders

Since 14 January 2026, Whatnot charges no commission on the part of a single order above $1,500 in these categories: comics & anime, toys & hobbies, coins & money, trading card games, entertainment cards, sports singles, and since 4 June 2026 bags & accessories and jewelry & watches. Sports breaks and surprise products are excluded.

Whatnot’s own example: a $2,000 item in a qualifying category pays 8% only on the first $1,500, so $120 in commission, plus processing on the full $2,000 ($58.30). There is nothing to enroll in, but the item must be listed in the right category. Whatnot describes this as a limited-time promotion that can change.

Whatnot seller fees before September 2026

Until 21 September 2026 every US seller paid the same commission: 8% of the item price in most categories, plus the same 2.9% + $0.30 processing fee. That is the rate most 2025 guides quote. The new structure keeps 8% as the standard rate, so sellers under $15,000 in sales per four weeks pay the same as in 2025. Only bigger sellers pay less.

Does Whatnot have no-fee days?

Sometimes. Whatnot runs limited 0% commission promotions: on 7 August 2026, for example, it charged 0% commission on all live and marketplace sales for 24 hours. Sellers often look for the same around Black Friday, but each promotion is announced separately in the app and help center, so don’t price on the assumption of one. Even on a 0% day, payment processing of 2.9% + $0.30 still applies.

Whatnot is cheaper than eBay’s standard 13.6% final value fee, mainly because Whatnot doesn’t take commission on shipping. eBay rates differ by category, so check your own numbers in the eBay fee calculator. For clothes, compare with the Depop and Poshmark calculators too: Depop charges only processing, which is cheaper than both. Our guide to Depop fees explains how its Boost fee changes that picture.

What’s not included in Whatnot’s fees

  • Tax on fees. In some US states Whatnot must charge tax on its commission and fees, and deducts it from your earnings.

  • Promotions. Whatnot runs temporary 0% commission days, but they apply to commission only, never to processing.

  • Your own costs: inventory, supplies and any shipping you cover. Put them in the Whatnot fee calculator to see your profit per sale.
